About Jim Harney

The Early Years
Jim Harney was born and grew up in the Northern Virginia area. While growing up, he became interested in music at an early age. He began playing the saxophone in 5th grade and hasn't looked back since. During his high school years, he began learning additional instruments like flute, clarinet and bass clarinet. |
College And Beyond
Jim attended James Madison University and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance with minors in flute and clarinet. While still in school at JMU (in 1985), Jim began working at Busch Gardens playing in the live shows. He has since gone on to work for Busch Gardens as a band captain, stage manager, audio technician and instrumental supervisor. In addition to working at Busch Gardens, Jim has had a wide variety of experience in the music industry. He has performed with numerous types of groups including a sting on Holland America cruise line, a national touring company of "A Christmas Carol" and numerous freelance playing jobs around the tidewater area.
Throughout his career as a musician, Jim has learned a great deal about many other aspects of the music business. In addition to being a sought after musician, he has become a successful arranger, copyist, teacher and recording engineer.
Recent Career
In the spring of 2004, Jim decided to make a career change and enrolled in ECPI College of Technology. During the period that he was in school at ECPI, Jim remained very active in the music community through performing, teaching, recording and arranging. In May of 2006, Jim graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 earning his Associate's Degree in Computer and Information Science with a concentration in Web Development. |

What's Happening Now
Jim is currently active in both music and web development and runs both Jim's Music Services (this site) and Jazz Harmony Designs, his web design company. Jim lives in Williamsburg, VA with his wife and 2 children.
